Get the Lowdown on Fertility Clinics with These Ten Significant Points

By Last Updated: 03/23/2023

For couples who have already faced the idea of not being able to have a baby strictly the natural way, dealing with the ins and outs of fertility clinics can seem daunting. Little is known about these clinics as they offer specialty procedures that deal with a couple’s most private matters. Matters that are not often shared among friends and family members. So, we’ve compiled these ten points to give you the lowdown on fertility clinics.

Point #1: Specialty procedures offered by fertility clinics are expensive – often very expensive.

With average cost of just one IVF cycle in the U.S. is $12,400 – many women need multiple cycles – fertility clinics may be too expensive for some couples to be able to use. The fact that not all insurances cover these procedures doesn’t help.

Point #2: Fertility clinics cannot change basic biology.

They will work with your biology. They will begin by trying to pinpoint the fertility problem and go from there, enhancing what you have through fertility drugs or bypassing the problem areas through procedures like IVF. But, they cannot change your basic biology or fix you if your biological clock has run out.

Point #3: Success rates don’t always add up the way they should

. Clinics will report their success rates, which do point to the rate of success of that clinic. But it fails to point to the type of patient the clinic takes on or what procedures can be found at that clinic. The more successful clinics may only be taking in the easiest of fertility problems, therefore having a better rate of success then the clinics which take on harder cases or more experimental procedures.

Point #4: Time is of the essence when it comes to fertility treatments.

Many woman wait too long to seek out a fertility clinic. The time to seek help through a fertility clinic is when you feel there is a problem with your fertility. While your OB/GYN may be able to offer you fertility drugs, getting an opinion on what the problem is and all of the options that can help you with that problem is often time sensitive.

Point #5: Seek to understand all there is to know about fertility clinics in your state.

Because fertility issues sometimes fringe on political issues there are different laws and rules in each state. Also, availability is an issue in some states, therefore clinics and procedures may not be available in your state. Do your research locally and then branch out to your surrounding states to see which has the best offers for your condition.

Point #6: Get opinions on every option from more than one clinic

Talk to more than one doctor and talk about what fertility options they offer. Get second, or even third opinions on each one of those procedure. When it comes to fertility procedures and their expense, it really does pay to get more than on opinion.

Point #7: Understand all of the risks that go along with fertility procedures.

By understanding what you could be facing, you can get any extra support you need right away. Whether the options you choose work or not, they can have long term negative effects that you didn’t understand from the onset of the procedures. For instance, failed procedures and miscarriages can cause Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, thus causing marriages to fail as well. Or, there can be health risks for the baby of certain fertility procedures.

Point #8: Don’t shun your regular doctors.

Take the healthiest path by keeping your regular OB/GYN and doctor in the loop. When you see a fertility specialist, you should keep the doctors who know your health history informed, allowing them to help you understand more about the procedures and advice you are getting.

Point #9: Create a support group of family, friends and local community support groups.

While talking to your significant other about what you are going through is important, having those you love around you at these times will keep your attitude positive and your confidence. Also, inquire about support groups at your fertility clinic, hospital or at your local community center. Asking questions and getting answers from those you have been where you are is tremendously helpful.

Point #10: There is no guarantee at all.

This goes for anything that can be done at the fertility clinic. While some offer a money back guarantee for certain procedures, those are only offered to couples that show a low risk. Don’t gamble with your money or your future. Stick with procedures with the best success rate that you can afford.

Point #11: Stopping fertility treatment is your decision.

As a business, a fertility clinic may want you to continue a procedure longer than you want to or up-sell you another more invasive or experimental procedure because the one you are on hasn’t worked. Know that you are able to stop treatment when you feel the time is right.
